Breaking Through Barriers in Cancer Immunotherapy: CMU Researchers Identify a New Strategy to Improve Treatment Effectiveness

Why do some cancer immunotherapies show promising results in animal studies but fail to achieve the same effectiveness in human clinical trials?

A research team led by Academician Mien-Chie Hung of China Medical University (CMU) has published a significant discovery in the prestigious journal Science, identifying a key mechanism that may explain why certain cancer immunotherapies fail.

The study found that cancer cells lacking a gene called MTAP can weaken the body's ability to recognize abnormal cells and activate immune defenses. This makes tumors less responsive to STING agonists, a class of drugs designed to stimulate the immune system to attack cancer.

More importantly, the researchers discovered that targeting cancer cell metabolism with a drug known as DFMO may help restore tumor sensitivity to STING-based therapies, potentially strengthening the immune system's ability to fight cancer.

This breakthrough provides new scientific insights into resistance to cancer immunotherapy and opens promising avenues for developing more precise, personalized cancer treatments based on patients' genetic profiles.
