New Hope for Chronic Wound Healing: CMU Researchers Develop Innovative Regenerative Biomaterial
Why do seemingly minor wounds in patients with diabetes sometimes take so long to heal, potentially developing into serious chronic wounds?
A research team led by Associate Professor Ming-You Shie of China Medical University (CMU) has combined stem cell technology and nanobiotechnology to develop an innovative collagen-based hydrogel with the potential to promote tissue regeneration, offering a promising new approach to diabetic wound treatment.
The researchers used a specialized calcium silicate material to stimulate adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells, enhancing their release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) with tissue-repair properties. These tiny vesicles act as cellular messengers, helping regulate inflammation, promote cell growth, and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels.
The team further incorporated these vesicles into a collagen hydrogel, enabling their sustained release at the wound site. In diabetic animal models, this innovative biomaterial demonstrated promising effects in reducing inflammation, promoting collagen formation, and accelerating wound healing.
This breakthrough highlights the potential of integrating advanced biomaterials with regenerative medicine. It also opens new possibilities for developing next-generation wound dressings and improving the future treatment of chronic diabetic wounds.
