A New Breakthrough in Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy: CMU Researchers Develop a Promising Dual-Target Treatment Strategy

Why is pancreatic cancer considered one of the most difficult cancers to treat? Despite significant advances in immunotherapy, many patients with pancreatic cancer still struggle to achieve effective treatment outcomes.

A research team led by Professor Hung-Rong Yen of China Medical University (CMU) has published an important study in the prestigious international journal Advanced Science, identifying a promising new strategy to enhance immunotherapy against pancreatic cancer.

The researchers discovered that the tumor microenvironment surrounding pancreatic cancer cells can suppress immune responses, preventing T cells—the immune system's primary cancer-fighting cells—from functioning effectively.

By targeting a protein called UCP2, the research team demonstrated that T-cell energy metabolism could be reprogrammed to strengthen their cancer-fighting capabilities. Simultaneously, blocking IL-17, a signaling molecule involved in inflammation and immune regulation, helped reduce immune suppression within the tumor microenvironment.

In multiple pancreatic cancer animal models, this dual-target strategy significantly enhanced antitumor immune responses and prolonged survival.

These findings provide valuable insights into how pancreatic cancer evades immune defenses and open promising new directions for developing more effective cancer immunotherapies. By combining immune cell metabolic regulation with targeted immune modulation, this research represents an important step toward future precision cancer treatment strategies.
